The BOSS Federation held their AGM and Members’ Day this week at Stationers Hall. The challenges facing the UK office supplies and services industry were discussed in detail.
BOSS Federation CEO Philip Lawson admitted that the BOSS sales strategy needed improving. This is despite BOSS ending the last financial year in surplus and with growing membership in terms of dealers.
Hot Topic of the Day: Impact of Amazon
Unsurprisingly, Amazon Business was a main talking part during the day. Particularly, as Lawson confirmed that BOSS were “actively engaging” with Amazon.
Thomas Schinkel delivered a State of the Industry Presentation to the 80 delegates. He said that traditional sectors had declined by 7% in the B2B marketplace in the UK during 2016. In addition, he stated the launch earlier this year of Amazon Business in the UK, also has impacted on these sales.
Steve Haworth, CEO of EVO Group also spoke of the impact of Amazon on the marketplace. He commented that despite the office supplies industry being renowned for being slow to react to change, ingrained resilience would win through.
Alex Tatham, MD at IT distributor Westcoast warned delegates that they were not using data well enough. He again spoke of the implications Amazon has on the B2B market but stated it was “unstoppable”.
However, Tatham also pointed to automation and robotics as other areas which will impact the industry in addition to Amazon. According to research by PwC, 50% of all existing jobs will be replaced by robots in the next 10 years.
He also spoke of the importance of developments within the printer services market and cyber security. These are the two main areas of growth for Westcoast.
