Following the departure of Shira Goodman, Staples has announced Sandy Douglas as the company’s new CEO. Formerly the North American President of Coca Cola, Douglas will start officially on 2nd April 2018.
Last week it revealed that Staples Inc CEO Shira Goodman had been “let go”. She became CEO in 2016 after the failed Staples merger with Office Depot. As the focus for the company moved away from its struggling retail business, Goodman concentrated on B2B customers taking the lead in a resellers’ strategy.
The takeover of Staples by Sycamore Partners in June 2017 saw Goodman remain as CEO. Confirmation of Goodman leaving the business was made in an internal memo by John Lederer, Executive Chairman.
“I know I speak for all our associates in acknowledging and thanking Shira for her years of dedicated leadership and wishing her the best in all future endeavours,” he said.

Lederer will lead the company on a day to day basis until Douglas takes up his position in April. He says of the new appointment:
“The North American Delivery business has a significant opportunity to accelerate long-term growth, and we are pleased to have Sandy join the leadership team at this important time. Sandy has extensive experience across multiple function areas including sales, marketing, merchandising and operations. This well-rounded experience makes him an ideal leader for Staples.”
Alexander “Sandy” Douglas began his career at Procter & Gamble in 1984 before joining Coca-Cola in 1988.
Speaking of his new role, Douglas says:
“I am honoured to be joining Staples as CEO. Together with the Company’s leadership and its associates, we will work to drive the business forward as we continue to deliver exceptional products, service and expertise to Staples’ customers.”
