For businesses, employee health and wellbeing has become a large talking point as the modern workplace has progressed. With companies introducing initiatives such as on-site gyms, sit-stand desks and more nutritional options in workplace cafeterias to try and curb stress, low motivation and general tiredness, does the solution instead lie in a much simpler premise? Introducing, the recharge room.

Many companies already incorporate break out areas and allot scheduled time for employees to get away from their desks. Yet, a one-size-fits all approach might not actually be the best way to keep workers embracing their creativity and motivation. A new idea for the workplace is the recharge room. Recharge rooms can be themed to suit a variety of circumstances, offering employees choice when they need to take a break. The important feature of a recharge room is to provide a relaxing environment for employees – no weights or treadmills should be in sight.

Meditation/Yoga Recharge Room

This type of recharge room best benefits those who practice Yoga or are keen to learn meditation. According to many experts, just five minutes of meditation can help improve sleep, concentration and focus throughout the course of a working day. For workers who deal with large amounts of pressure daily, a meditation or yoga room could help them release any pent up negative thoughts or emotions. It’s important to remember that not every employee will want to relieve tension and stress through exercise. It could be just as enlightening for some to have a small space with a floor mat and some soothing sounds to unwind in.

Spa or Massage Room

For some companies, treating workers to a Spa day or enlisting the help of local Massage Therapists may already fall into line with their employee wellbeing policies. But for others, it can be an effective means of combating medical problems or physical health. At the very least, a brief 10 minute spell sat in a massage chair has been proven to relieve the pressure on joints and nerves. Whilst sit-stand desks may be one way to attempt to tackle physical wellbeing at work, experts advise they should only be put into use sparingly. Something as simple as receiving a quick massage or spending time in a spa room might be instead better at inspiring higher energy levels and overall drive.

Electronic Free Room

There’s no escaping that technology is slowly taking over our lives. The modern workplace is no longer an exception to this rule. But with the health warnings given in relation to our reliance on technology in every day life, it could be worth designing an electronic free room to help employees get off the grid. No phones, no pagers, no laptops and no tablets might sound like hell for some. But for others, a technology break during a lunch hour or at several short points throughout the work day might be just what the doctor ordered. Purposefully disconnecting from the internet world can give us more time to reflect and put both business and personal matters into better perspective. An electronic free room could stop us all from suffering from information overload.

Time to Recharge

Allowing employees time to recharge, refocus and replenish during working hours is becoming ever more important for companies to consider. Productivity and performance expert Tony Schwartz explains why the best rest for workers isn’t just a good night’s sleep. “When under pressure to perform, many people have a tendency to push harder and forego rest. But that’s a mistake. Human beings aren’t designed to expend energy continuously. Rather we’re meant to pulse between spending and recovering energy. The best kind of rest includes not just a long stretch of sleep at night, but also short, restorative breaks throughout the day – about every 90 minutes or so, ideally.”
