New findings indicate that the average worker in Britain will spend nearly one working day per month to fix IT related issues. So how much are IT disruptions costing your business exactly?
If the new research presented is to be believed, then your business just like many other organizations in the UK could be losing as much as £3.4 billion solely due to IT disruptions.
These findings come from the technology services provider Probrand, who surveyed 1,137 UK workers who were both part time or full time employed and asked them just how much time they spend each working day attempting to resolve or having to report IT issues.
IT Disruptions Having A Direct Impact on Workplace Productivity
While much is to be said that overall air quality can affect productivity and drinks like tea can help to boost it, the study gives a strong indication that IT disruptions are just as significant when it comes to productivity levels in a business.
On average, the survey found that workers who regularly use IT systems at work can spend an average of 5% of their day trying to fix or ask others to fix connections and IT technology related issues.
To put this into perspective, the loss of 5% of a working day due to technology issues equates to:
• 21 minutes of lost productivity a day
• 1.75 hours of a work week
• 7 hours (usually one working day) per month
This surprising breakdown leads to an average cost of just under £3.4 billion for UK employers on an annual basis.
Most Reported IT Issues at Work
Broken down into a list of the top five most reported IT issues in the workplace, the survey determined that:
• 34% regularly report slow running equipment
• 27% say most of their IT disruptions come from internet connectivity issues
• 19% are forced to report cyber breaches and hacking attempts
• 11% experience frustrations when it comes to making sure additional computer equipment such as printers and scanners are correctly working with their machine.
• And 9% would place outdated hardware as the most disruptive issue they encounter when using IT systems.
Additionally, the workers asked as part of the survey also placed some of the blame with their IT department or IT support providers, who were commented as being “under resourced when resolving technical issues”
Averaging out the time it takes for IT disruptions to be resolved by IT departments or support services, it’s predicted that this stands at nearly 6.2 hours, which has often led many workers to take matters in their own hands and attempt to fix IT issues themselves, causing a breakdown in overall productivity and focus.
Time for a New Approach on End User Issues?
Marketing Director at Probrand, Matt Royle, believes that it might be time for companies and employers to analyse end user issues more extensively in order to avoid drops in workplace productivity due to IT disruptions.

Naturally, issues arise from the IT itself as well as end user error.
